HE may be in his 60s but Rod Stewart wore it as well as ever when he rocked Leeds United’s Elland Road stadium. Thousands of music fans flocked to the famous old ground last night for Scottish singer Rod’s only 2011 date in the north of England. More than 9,000 seats were set up for the crowd on temporary flooring that had been laid on Elland Road’s hallowed turf. Other people settled into the ground’s regular seats as the evening’s star attraction strutted his stuff on a giant stage in front of the South Stand. Interested spectators were due to include Leeds legend Peter Lorimer, who football fanatic Rod watched many times while the midfielder was playing for the Scottish international side. Last night’s gig was the first held at Elland Road since a 30,000-capacity homecoming show by local indie rockers Kaiser Chiefs in 2008. United, however, hope that a steady stream of top acts will now start beating a path to their door. City council chiefs gave Leeds permission in April to stage three outdoor concerts every year. And although no further shows are planned for 2011, United’s initial hat-trick of gigs could in theory take place as early as next summer. Other bands who have performed at the ground over the years include Queen, U2 and Happy Mondays. We look forward to being at them all!
